Government’s Traffic Ticket Policy Reflects Poor Governance and Anti-Public Measures

Traffic Police Has Turned into a “Revenue Generation Machine” Instead of Ensuring Discipline.
If 3,000 Officials Issue 25 Tickets Daily, Rs. 2.5 Billion Will Be Collected Monthly from the Public.
Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore Ziauddin Ansari Advocate strongly criticizes Punjab government’s bad governance and traffic police challan policy

Lahore: Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore, Zia-ud-Din Ansari Advocate, has strongly criticized the Punjab government’s performance and its traffic ticketing policy, terming it a clear example of poor governance, anti-public decision-making, and institutional failure. He stated that assigning a daily target of 25 challans to each traffic warden is equivalent to economic exploitation of the common citizen. He said that instead of improving traffic discipline, the traffic police has effectively been transformed into a “revenue generation machine,” where approximately 3,000 to 5,000 personnel are deployed daily on roads primarily to collect fines, while core responsibilities such as traffic management, public facilitation, and accident prevention are being neglected.Zia-ud-Din Ansari Advocate further stated that unnecessary barricades, checkpoints, and artificial obstructions across the city are not only causing inconvenience but also mental stress for citizens, along with wastage of time and resources. He added that if, on average, 3,000 personnel issue 25 tickets daily, it would result in a monthly collection of approximately Rs. 2.5 billion from the public—an unbearable burden in the current economic situation. He remarked that rising electricity and gas prices, excessive utility bills, load shedding, increased waste and sewerage taxes, and inflation have already crippled the public, and this traffic challan policy has further aggravated their hardships. He emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami rejects this anti-public policy and will raise its voice at every forum to protect citizens’ rights. He warned that if the challan target policy is not immediately withdrawn and practical steps are not taken to improve the traffic system, Jamaat-e-Islami will soon announce a city-wide protest movement.
